real time
Friday 5 Jun 2009
On 6 June 2009, the Zuiderzee Museum presents the Real time project by designer Maarten Baas during the largest art fair in the world, Art Basel in Switzerland. The living clocks on film were highly commended during the Salone del Mobile design and furniture fair in Milan. They will be on show in Enkhuizen during the 2009-2010 winter programme of the Museum.
In Real time, the experience of time is the focus of attention. Four film clocks with the names Grandfathers Clock, World Clock, Sweepers Clock, Analog Digital clock indicate the time with the help of film images: filmed people represent the time. They replace the function of the clock face and influence the display of time, by drawing the clock hands, for example, and adjusting these every minute. During the presentation, one of the clocks will come into operation live.
Timelines
With the human timepiece, Baas wishes to give an idea of how time passes, what people can do with it, and how endless time is. The project symbolizes the Zuiderzee Museum’s approach to time: it combines the timelines of the present and the past instead of displaying history chronologically.
