Cabinet with biblical representations

The cabinet has four doors and is divided into two spaces, one above the other. The central frame accommodates a drawer across the entire width of the cabinet. The doors show scenes from the life of the prophet Elijah. In the upper left-hand corner, Elijah is fed by the raven (1 Kings 5-6). In the upper right-hand corner he is represented with the widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:12). At the bottom left, Elijah is in the desert, where he is touched by an angel and is summoned to eat (1 Kings I9: 5-6). The door in the lower right-hand corner shows the Ascension with Elijah in command of fiery horses and a carriage, while he is watched by Elisa (2 Kings 2:11). No prints that could have served as models are known. It is not evident that there was a connection between the painted biblical representations and the function of the cabinet. This applies to almost all the painted furniture in the collection. However, there is an atmosphere of religiosity that permeated the everyday lives of the prosperous protestants. Besides being intended to display the wealth of the owners, these household goods were primarily intended to show their piety.
